Autumn Fabric Postcards

Autumn is the perfect time of year to make fabric postcards.  Not only is it starting to cool down, but the colors of the season are so amazing.  How could you not want to sew with all the different hues of oranges, yellows and greens that fall provides us with?

Instructions to make an artsy fall/autumn

fabric postcard.

Start with a 4" X 6" base of fast-2-fuse, press a fall leaves fabric onto the fast-2-fuse.  Let it cool a little, then place silk leaves on top and free motion stitch.  Then sew on embellishments such as beads or leaf charms.  For the back side of the postcard place a leaf rubbing plate on a flat surface and tape down, lay a muslin fabric over the rubbing plate.  With your favorite fall color Shiva Artist Paint Stick rub over the plate to make the leaf impression on your fabric.  Let set over night then press.  Once the oil paint is dry, iron on the fabric you made to the back of your fabric postcard (the fast 2 fuse has stick stuff on both sides).  Once the front and back of the postcard has been assembled.  Zig zag stitch the edges of the postcard with a variegated thread.  Use the smallest stitch length and a width of about 4.5.  Stamp on the back of the postcard with any fall stamps that you may have.  I prefer to stamp on fabric with with Versa Craft pigment ink by Tsukineko. Then address the postcard, I use Faber-Castell PITT artist pens.  The ink does not bleed and has a nice fine point.

Anything Goes Exchange

This series of postcards was made from canvas fabric that was part of a "Paint, Paper and Paste" workshop at the Houston International Quilt Show 2008. The class was a lot of fun.  You combined wall paper paste and paint to create a thick paint that you could dredge on and then scrape into to make textured fabrics.
