Adopting a dog can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but finding a home
for a pet in need of care and affection might be a lengthy and arduous process.

enforced.
Dog License Law (167;161.04) a dog license must be obtained for your pet from
the New York City Department Of Health. Licensing your dog is a legal
requirement and unlicensed pet owners can be fined for failing to file the
correct paperwork with the health department.
Your dog must be kept on a leash in all public places (167;161.05) and the leash
must not extend beyond six feet in length.
The "clean up" law (Section 1310 of the New York Public Health Code) is simply
that, a law that insists on the routine clean up after your pets in public
places.
Animal Nuisance Law (167;161.03) protects your neighbors from any pet that is
considered a 'nuisance'
Rabies Vaccination Law (11.66) is a law which pertains to a compulsory
vaccination against rabies.
A rabies shot in New York City is not expensive, in fact a complete package of
vaccinations for your dog ranges from $10 to $100 per year.
Resources and Amenities For Dogs in New York
New York City is a town equipped for pets and pet owners. Dogs are well catered
for in all five boroughs of the city, and there are a number of "dog friendly"
areas throughout the city.
If you are downtown, popular dog runs and dog friendly areas can be found in
Union Square park at 15th ST., and Washington Square Park close to New York
University.
In midtown, and the Upper East and West Side, Central Park has 23 dog friendly
areas. You can review these areas of the park on the Central Park website, which
maps and displays the dog parks and dog runs within the park itself.
Further uptown Carl Schurz Park at East End Ave and 84th ST. I s a dog friendly
park and even further uptown Franz Sigel, Riverdale Park and Ft. Washington Park
at 165th ST all have dog runs and dog friendly zones. You are spoiled for choice
in any part of town for accessible dog runs and parks.

The Humane Society of New York provide excellent advice about the options for
dog adoption NYC residents have. An application is available online and will ask
a series of questions about allergies, travel and work habits, children,
visiting family, your home, neighborhood and the type of home you have.

support for a dog in need, there are always plenty of dogs that need a loving
home!
