Sewing365.com
A comprehensive resource for people who love to sew,
embroider, quilt, craft- create. Whether you are
looking for information about how to sew, appliqué, quilt, etc, to
locate vintage mail order or old out of date patterns, or another sewing
topic, you will find it here at sewing 365.
Antique Patterns Restored and Reproduced
Not to brag- but we have a massive collection of vintage
embroidery transfer patterns and mail order patterns from 1900's,
1920's, 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. Our collection includes designs
from Alice Brooks, Laura Wheeler, The Workbasket, Anne Adams,
Vogart, and some very rare patterns from Superior Transfer Designs,
American Thread Company, Diane Transfer Patterns, Betty Burton, and
Joseph Walkers.
The old patterns are so versatile you could use them to make
"new" flour sack kitchen towels, as motifs on aprons, pillow cases,
dish towels, table cloths, pot holders, pan holders, toaster covers,
mixer covers, quilts and so much more. The baby patterns have a
traditional charm that can be used to embellish baby quilts, crib
sheets, burp cloths, baby bibs, diaper covers, baby bonnets, baby
booties, infant layette, pinafore, clothing and diaper bags (the
list is really endless).

History of Vintage Patterns
| Grit Needle Craft Founded in 1885 the magazine
is still in business today. It became a glossy magazine in
1996, prior to that it was a rural newspaper that was
delivered by newsboy and direct mail distribution. A magazine that offered mail
order patterns. Some of the designs included a designer name
and some with a number only. Popular designers for Grit were
Anne Adams, Mirian Martin, and Laura Wheeler.
Workbasket The mail order magazine began in 1935. They
offered lace, needlework, iron on, embroidery and transfer
patterns. The workbasket transfers were suppliments to the
magazine that was published by Modern Handcrafts of Kansas
City. The original patterns were printed on a small sheet
that was stapled inside on newsprint. Later the patterns
were printed on 21"X30" (large sheet) on newsprint and came
in an envelope to customers who renewed their subscription
or ordered the specific pattern. Interestingly enough, most
sheets "workbasket" marked on them. However, most were red
lined and numbered. The transfers were often an assortment
of designs that were unrelated. To date workbasket patterns-
look at the number printed on the transfer sheet: C901
series were printed in October 1935, C902 series was printed
November 1935, 2-900 series were printed on January 1944.
Other Popular Pattern Companies:
Ladies Home Journal,
Workbasket, Ladies Home Companion, Alice Brooks, Iris Lane,
Spadea, The American Weekly, Superior, Star Pattern,
Pricilla, Peerless and Early Pictoral Review, Vogart,
Walkers. |
